More about the Wildflower School Curriculum
So you want to be an herbalist...... Come join us as we learn to live with the seasons, getting to know our local plant allies, making lots of fun herbal preparations, and becoming more present in our own bodies as well as with others. The Wildflower School focuses on all things herbal and green, and generally not found in books. We honor and and rely heavily on oral traditions. Nicole is a firm believer in experiential learning. In classes, the science of herbalism is carefully balanced with the art and energetic realms to offer the student a well-rounded herbal perspective. Much of what we do is hands-on and interactive. In 2011 we are excited to introduce the concept of herbal paths to our curriculum, adding more hours and advanced study for our future students
Curriculum at the Wildflower School provides a deep and comprehensive study of North American Herbal Medicine with a emphasis on bioregionalism, conservation, land stewardship, personal reflection, and building a strong herbal community. All curriculum materials are unique to the Wildflower School and are constantly evolving. Single classes, workshops and intensives are offered through out the year and are open to the community at large. The full 6 month program takes up to 20 students. Program participants may apply to fill 1 of the 5 apprentice positions offered to students in the Wildflower School Apothecary and work more closely with Nicole and other Herbalists making products and gardening.
The full 6 month herbal program comes from a deeply ecological perspective of working with plants as medicine. We use both traditional and non-traditional teaching methods like Botany Yoga, Personal Projects, Making First Aid Supplies, and Latin Binomial Spelling Bees. We incorporate different holistic healing models as we approach using herbs both pharmacologically and energetically infusing wisdom from Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Greek Medicine, and the Tarot into our learning. We look at herbs from the ground up and all the way into formulas.
The goals of the program are to
- provide a solid basis for learning how to study and practice herbalism
- understand holistic approaches to using herbs in the human body based not only on pharmacology but vital response and humoural energetics(hot, cold, moist, dry)
- identify local medicinal plants in the garden and field and any ecological concerns surrounding the plants
- create unique and interesting preparations with medicinal plants (and other natural substances)
- introduce the idea of working with clients and the human body in both a home and professional setting
- learn to live with the seasons as a weedcrafter and gardener
- learn how to access resources in your herbal community and add them into your practice as an herbalist
